United Methodist Women
A light luncheon and
“heavy agenda for Spring 2010” highlighted the general meeting of the United
Methodist Women on February 21 in the church fellowship hall.
According to information shared by UMW Co-President Linda Stanley, the
months ahead will be busy ones for the church women, particularly in the realm
of mission work, with needs extending from local to global in scope. A brief
overview of year-long plans, including a budget report by Jo Cawthorne,
treasurer, highlighted the business session.
Members were reminded of the upcoming Granville-Vance Sub-District
meeting at Gillburg United Methodist Church on Sunday, March 7, at 2:30 p.m. A
large turn-out of local members for this occasion is encouraged, especially
since the location is a convenient one for area women.
In future weeks, preparation and distribution of “health kits” for disaster
victims will continue to be a major focus for the group, as needs arise. Doug
Wassum, Missions Committee chairman, has announced the next pick up for kits
sometime in March.
In addition, UMW circles will assist with the annual Lenten Luncheons –
scheduled each Wednesday, Feb.24 through March 24, at noon in the fellowship
hall. This year’s study theme for the series, led by Rev. Speake, will be “From
the Wilderness Tabernacle to the Cross.”
The general meeting program also featured a display to emphasize the UMW Reading
Program. Samples of new books and other materials available in the church
library were available for inspection.
Currently, there are 54 church women on the UMW roster, but more would be
better. And while “God’s mission becomes our mission” as explained in the 2010
UMW Yearbook, opportunities received through participation in the organization
far exceed the obligations, members agree.
Any woman wishing to join the UMW may call Linda Stanley or Vera Gatano,
co-presidents. We welcome you… and we need you! ...Vera and Linda
United Methodist Men
February was a fairly busy month for the United Methodist Men. The men held a Valentine’s Dinner on February 11th and over 80 people attended the event. Special thanks go to all the men and several FUMC women who helped set up, purchase supplies and prepare the food. We would also like to thank Sue Kelley for compiling the attendee list and Dr. Larry Webb for providing the music. The UMM hope that all who attended enjoyed the food, fellowship and music.
Approximately 20 men attended the monthly UMM breakfast on February 14th. Nancy Wilson, Vance County Tourism Director, presented a program on our local tourism.
The UMM have two activities scheduled so far this spring. They will prepare and serve the food for the March 24th Lenten Luncheon. Also, it is time to start cleaning out your closets, attics and garages because the annual UMM Yard Sale will be on Saturday May 1st from 7:00 am to noon in the Fellowship Hall. The UMM will start accepting items in April. We will have more information on the yard sale in the near future.
The next UMM breakfast will be on Sunday, March 14th at 8:00am in the Fellowship Hall. Danny Wilkerson, First United Methodist Church Member and Henderson’s Fire Chief, will present a program on the Henderson Fire Department. We had some new men join us for the February breakfast and would love to have even more in March. Please join us. Remember, the breakfast is FREE for all first time men.

MUSIC--
Now that we are in Lent, there is a noticeable difference in our music as it reflects the extended period of reflection and repentance as we approach Easter. Seek Ye the Lord, And the Father will Dance, Pie Jesu, will be our featured anthems before Palm Sunday.
Palm Sunday will bring festive music on March 28 as Dr. John-ston’s stirring organ prelude will provide the excitement for Jesus’ walk into Jerusalem with loud Hosannas shouted by our children as they process down the aisles with palms. Accompanying the Chancel Choir will be a 9 piece orchestra which will add to the excitement of the day.
All of this, of course, prepares us for the turn of events that took place on that day and the week to come as the music takes another turn to help depict the mood.
Easter Sunday, April 4th, will be glorious as trumpets accompany the Chancel Choir as we sing Christ the Lord is Risen Today and Crown Him with Many Crowns.
Thank you for the many, many positive comments that we have received on our music as our church continues to strive for a dignified blend to provide musical diversity.

A children’s musical about the fishes and loaves.
Sunday, March 21 at 7 p.m.
Make plans to attend!
